If you’re interested in South Padre Island’s history, if you appreciate its uniqueness, and if you’d like to help preserve and share that history and unique sense of place with others, then you’re invited to be part of a fact-finding commission to research and identify possible options for historical preservation on the Island.

In order to meet all of the seasonal demands on the Board of Aldermen, the January 3rd meeting has been rescheduled to January 10th and the January 17th meeting to January 24th. Please check the Community Calendar for time and location.

Emergency Sea Turtle Rescue!!

Water Interruption


Due to a minor accident there has been an interruption in water services in the East Verna Jean and Gulf Blvd. area. In addition the area between East Sunset and East Constellation are being affected.  The interruption may last between 6 and 8 hours.

KOA World’s Largest Surf Fishing Tournament Sets World Record

Despite high winds and constant rain, throngs of surf fishermen lined the beaches of South Padre Island to take part in the inaugural Kampgrounds of America World’s Largest Surf Fishing Tournament. The event, which ended with 415 registered participants, set the new world record for surf fishing tournaments, according to the Guinness Book of World Records.

The City of Hidalgo, TX, BorderFest Association, Hidalgo Chamber of Commerce, and The City of Hidalgo Texas Municipal Facilities Corporation has selected Minnie Solomonson and Robert N. Pinkerton Jr. to be inducted into the 2007 Rio Grande Valley Walk of Fame.

 

Remembering Eliseo B.Vega


Port Isabel Municipal Judge Eliseo B. Vega passed away on March 11. A public visitation will be held at 6 p.m. today March 13, 2007, followed by a rosary at 7 p.m., at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m., Wednesday, March 14, 2007 at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church with an interment to follow to the Port Isabel City Cemetery. A Celebration of Life will be held after the funeral services at the Port Isabel Fire Hall, 204 Musina St. The public is invited to attend.

ZERO Tolerance Litter Policy


What would it be like if we had no litter on this Island?

That is what the Town of South Padre Island is trying to accomplish. The SPI Board of Aldermen has approved initiation of a new anti-litter campaign, with a ZERO tolerance litter policy.
 

BOA Workshop


The Board of Aldermen will host a joint workshop with the Economic Development Corporation Wednesday, June 6 at 1 p.m. at the Convention Centre to hear a progress report and discuss the new SPI Birding Center and review the parking study compiled by Carl Walker, Inc. which will be presented by Mr. Lee Bourque.  Please enter through the south end of the Convention Centre by the Birding and Nature Boardwalk.

New Aldermen Take Oath of Office


The newly elected Aldermen, Kirk Mills and Courtney Hayden, and re-elected Tara Rios-Ybarra will be sworn in before the public Wednesday, June 6 at 5:30 p.m. at Club Padre, 5800 Padre Blvd.  Rick Ridolfi and Jim Hoff will be recognized by Mayor Pinkerton for their public service on the Board of Aldermen.

Summer Friday Fireworks


The Annual Summer Friday Fireworks has begun.  The firework display starts at 9:15 pm every Friday evening.  The entertaining display is best viewed between Marlin and Red Snapper streets.

Fireworks Over the Bay!


Come join us celebrate 4th of July on beautiful South Padre Island and enjoy Fireworks Over the Bay!  The firework celebration will begin Friday, June 29th at 9:15 p.m. on the bayside between Marlin and Red Snapper Street.  You can enjoy an even more impressive display on Wednesday, July 4th at 9:15 p.m. 

The best spectator viewing for Fireworks Over the Bay! is at the various bayside food and establishments located between Marlin and Red Snapper Streets, but the show can also be enjoyed from many other areas as well.  COME AND ENJOY!
 

Firework Safety


We know that everyone loves to have fireworks for the 4th of July, but
what you may or may not know is that discharging of fireworks within the Town of South Padre Island limits is prohibited (Ord. No. 14, Sec. 8-4). Visitors and residents should find an area where discharging of fireworks is allowed and follow the safety tips provided by the National Council on Fireworks Safety to avoid serious and painful injuries.

Bahama St., Laguna Blvd. to Laguna Madre Bay, will be repaired for street improvements.  The street will remain open to local residents when needed, but will require partial/temporary closure during morning hours.

Please excuse the construction at Neptune Circle - Beach Access #16 and Starlight Circle - Beach Access #17. The Town of South Padre Island encourages you to approach these accesses with caution and safety. A projected drive over will be installed  at Starlight Circle - Beach Access #17, while a walk over will be installed at Neptune Circle - Beach Access #16. The project will be completed by the end of July. Temporary accesses will be placed to access to the beach at both locations. Notice of Public Hearing on Tax Increase

The TOWN OF SOUTH PADRE ISLAND will hold a public hearing on a proposal to increase total tax revenues from properties on the tax roll in the preceding tax year.  The public hearing will be held on August 15, 2007 at 5:30 pm at Club Padre at 5800 Padre Blvd., South Padre Island, Texas.  A second hearing will be held August 29,2007 at 5:30 pm at Club Padre at 5800 Padre Blvd., South Padre Island, Texas.

Notice is hereby given that the Board of Aldermen of the Town of South Padre Island, Texas, will hold a Public Hearing on Wednesday, August 29, 2007 during a Special Meeting at 5:30 p.m. at Club Padre, 5800 Padre Boulevard, South Padre Island, Texas.  The purpose of the Public Hearing is to discuss the Fiscal Year 2007-08 Budget.  This budget will raise more total property taxes than last year’s budget by $836,650 or 21.2%, and of that amount $211,842 is tax revenue to be raised from new property added to the tax roll this year.

The Recycling Center, located at 108 W. There is a position open on the Convention and Visitors Authority Board of Directors for the remainder of a term ending September 30, 2008.  This position is limited to a representative from a full service hotel.

Texas Mosquito Control Association visits South Padre Island

The Town of South Padre Island welcomes members of the Texas Mosquito Control Association (TMCA) during their 51st Annual Meeting Oct. 10-11 at the Sheraton South Padre Island Beach and Hotel Condominiums.
 

Mosquito Spraying


The Town of South Padre Island will be spraying for mosquito control on 10/8, 10/9, and 10/10. The Town does not spray during unfavorable weather conditions such as high winds exceeding 10 mph, rain, or extreme cold temperatures. If there is a need for spraying, application begins as early as dusk or when they are most active.

Astronomy buffs, sci-fi fans, and everyone who likes to gaze at the night sky are in for a treat.  Price is a Professor of Physics in the Department of Physics and Center for Gravitational Wave Astronomy. Constitutional Amendment Election November 6

The Cameron County Department of Elections and Voter Registration have provided the following information in regard to the Nov. 6 Constitutional Amendment Election: Propositions,  and Election Day Voting Locations.

Early Voting will take place at the Honorable Bennie Ochoa III County Annex Building, 505 Hwy. 100, Port Isabel, Tx October 31 from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and November 1-2 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
