“D” Day (Dune Building
Day)
|
|
The
Town of South Padre Island had approximately 20
volunteers helping place Christmas trees and hay
bale bundles to help with the pilot project to build
dunes within the Town limits. The project
involved placing hay bales, sand fencing, and Christmas
trees on the beach to catch the blowing sand in
order to help build and replace the dunes that were
lost to the strong waves caused by Hurricanes Rita
and Katrina.
We didn’t get as far along
the beach as we had hoped. Sand fencing was
put up from White Sands south to Parkshore.
Parkshore south almost to Fantasy circle is comprised
of hay bales interspersed with Christmas trees.

Keep the Island Beautiful
by Recycling
|
Recycling
will become a reality on South Padre Island beginning
Saturday, February 4, 2006, at 8:00 a.m. Island
residents will be able to drop off their recyclables
on the 1st and 3rd Saturday
of each month, between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and
12:00 noon at the South Padre Island Training Center
located at 108 West Retama (across from Whataburger).
The recycling station will be equipped and staffed
under arrangements with Allied Waste Services (formerly
BFI, Inc.).
In early June 2005, the South Padre
Island Chamber of Commerce Island Enhancement Committee
initiated discussions with Allied Waste Services
General Manager, Mr. Jon Dick, to explore recycling
opportunities for South Padre Island. Following
those discussions, the Chamber addressed a letter
to Mr. Dewey Cashwell, City Manager, outlining a
proposed recycling plan and the Chamber’s support
for recycling. From there the Town staff worked
with Allied Waste Services to carryout the project.
Allied Waste generously ordered a specially designed
compartmentalized recycling trailer specifically
for use on the Island.
Chamber representatives and Town
Officials will be on hand for the grand opening
of the recycling program at 8:00 a.m., Saturday,
February 4, 2006. Everyone is invited to attend.
Darrell Mangham, Chairman of the Chamber’s Island
Enhancement Committee, stated this is only the beginning
of recycling on South Padre Island. Items that will
be collected include aluminum cans, tin cans, card
board, newspapers and any type of plastic bottles
(laundry detergent plastic jugs are not included).

For more information you can call
the Public Works Department at phone number (956)
761-1025, BFI at 1-800-423-7316 or the Chamber of
Commerce at (956) 761-4412.
