The Town of
South Padre Island Public Works Department, the South
Padre Island Economic Development Corporation (EDC), and
the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT)
are working together to nourish the Town’s beach.
Beginning
Monday, December 8, 2003,
TxDOT-contracted dump trucks
will be
driving down Highway 100 from the area north of the
Convention Centre. They will access the beach via
White Sands St. and will be depositing beach quality sand
in the area from the La Quinta,
south to the Park Shore Condominiums.

This
area of the beach is most threatened by erosion and the
Town appreciates TxDOT’s
cooperation to let us have the sand from the highway they
need to keep clear. It is extremely important that
we take this opportunity to re-establish our beaches.
The area north of Park Shore Condominium to our Town
limits experience most sever erosion.
TxDOT’s
goal is to clear the right of way of Park Road 100. At
this time, TxDOT does not know how long this project will
last. Conservative estimates are that this will be
at least a one month project.
The
Town also extends its appreciation to the property owners
and residents along White Sands St. for their
understanding and cooperation during this project.
